LONG STORY
SHORT
1. Eduroam = Global Wi-Fi (not only) for students 🌐
You are probably familiar with the principle of roaming from your mobile operator. The Eduroam Wi-Fi network works in a similar way. You log in once (at "your" university) and then you can connect to the Eduroam network not only at universities in more than 100 countries around the world.
2. VPN: your secure communication channel 🛡️
A VPN provides a secure, encrypted connection, protecting sensitive data from unauthorized access. Even if someone is "spying" on you, all they will see is noise. It works at home, in a café, or abroad. EduVPN, which we use at the university, connects you to the university network from anywhere and is free of charge.
3. EduVPN = portal to the knowledge 🏛️
When studying, you will definitely have to work with electronic sources. These include professional articles from conferences or journals, as well as monographs. Many of them are available through so-called eResources. You can access them either through the university network or via eduVPN.
4. Erasmus, vacation, nomadism ✈️
You can also use a VPN outside of university—for example, when paying online using hotel Wi-Fi or sending sensitive files. We discuss why it is important to think about secure communication in more detail in this chapter of Cybercompass.
5. How secure are public Wi-Fi networks? 📶
We have debunked three myths circulating in the public sphere about connecting to public Wi-Fi networks and compiled them into this article.
HOW-TO
DO IT
#1 Set up Eduroam as soon as you start at the university
Once you log in, your computer or mobile device will automatically connect to the Eduroam network every time.
Instructions and more detailed information are available at it.muni.cz.
#2 Install and use eduVPN on your laptop and phone
More details and setup guides for individual platforms are at it.muni.cz.
#3 Get to know the rules for using university IT
As soon as you use computers in study rooms or classrooms, or connect to Eduroam, you become a user of the university IT system.
Your rights and obligations are set out in this directive. We strongly recommend that you read it so that you know what you can and cannot do on the university network.
