Installation guide

The process consists of five small steps – the most important is creating a strong, unique passphrase. We will guide you through setting up a new account in the LastPass manager and installing LastPass add-on to your browser (LastPass add-on for Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Opera).

How to work with LastPass

How to log in, how to get started?

Thanks to the previous tutorial, you should have your LastPass account ready along with the browser add-on. From now on, every time you start working with your device, you should log in to your password manager too. This is done by clicking on the LastPass add-on icon in the upper bar of your browser. You’ll recognize a successful login by the grey icon turning red. This action won't hinder your work at all; it just helps you save or autofill passwords instead of you doing it manually.

How to save a password?

After you log in to any account (Facebook, e-mail, IS, …), LastPass will ask you whether you wish to save the password. (It will display a pop-up window in the upper right corner.) It’s up to you to decide which accounts you want to save into LastPass. Moreover, LastPass will alert you if you use the same password for more than one account. If that's the case, it'll recommend you changing it (and also help generate a strong password for you).

Once you’ve saved the password – let’s say, for Facebook – the next time you return to Facebook, LastPass will recognize it and offer you to autofill the username and password. You can also save more accounts with different passwords at one service (like if you have multiple Gmail accounts).

How to access your passwords while working on someone else’s device?

There are two options: the first is using one-time passwords generated by LastPass itself (we highly recommend this solution for almost all cases!). The other option (for devices that you fully trust) is logging into LastPass via https://www.lastpass.com/ (login button is in the upper right corner). The space inside the online LastPass is called a Vault. The Vault looks like a board with all your saved passwords pinned. By clicking on the chosen account (like LinkedIn in the picture), you’ll access the service directly.

What else can you use the Vault for?

If you want to manage your passwords (copying, viewing, categorizing into folders, etc.), you must go to the Vault. You can use https://www.lastpass.com/, or you can click the add-on icon and choose Open my Vault. By the way, the add-on includes many other options: show the saved passwords, add a new password, generate a new strong password, log out of the manager, etc.

Is it necessary to log out every time?

We recommend logging out regularly – at least in the first weeks of using the manager. This way, you can practice remembering the strong, unique password (passphrase) that you use for LastPass. Logging out is also safer.

Can I use LastPass also on a mobile device?

Sure, the app can be downloaded for Android devices on Google Play as well as iOS devices in the Apple Store.

Three advantages of LastPass manager

LastPass offers more functions: truly private notes, saving bank information, or sharing data with a chosen person. If you are interested, visit the official guides.

Easy management

No one can remember all the apps in which (s)he has created accounts. But saving the passwords into the manager provides you with a neat overview of your accounts. LastPass enables you to categorize passwords into folders, too, and you can access it from any device.

Simplicity

LastPass is a compromise between careless behavior (like writing passwords on paper) and advanced encrypted managers. You’ll see that using it is no big deal!

Vigilance

The key is choosing a strong passphrase for your password manager and using it safely. Even if hackers break into LastPass, they won't be able to access your passwords, and LastPass providers would notify you in case of the slightest risk.
